HOLIDAY COTTAGE ISLE OF ISLAY

Islay was settled by the Irish in the 3rd century. Invaded by the Norse in the 12th century becoming the headquarters of the Lords of the Isles for 4 centuries. Their seat was at Loch Finlaggen near Port Askaig where their presence can still be felt. Monuments of historic interest include the 9th cross at Kilchoman, Dunyvaig Castle and the Chapel at Kilchiaran founded by St Columba.

 

Visit Islay in the winter for bird life, the lovely deserted beaches and the wonderful sunsets. The take off, flight and landing of flocks of birds is spectacular to watch. There are RSPB Reserves at Loch Gruinart and The Oa. Seals can often be seen on the rocks in the harbour at Portnahaven.

Gardeners can take a boat to the Isle of Jura and visit the magnificient Jura House walled garden or to Colonsay House Garden.

 

The world’s finest single peated malt whisky is produced Islay. Visit during Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Malt and Music) week the master class warehouse tastings are a “must” for the connoisseur.

 

Islay is also the home of the finest seafood, freshly caught langoustines, lobsters, scallops

Oysters. Try Cullen Skink it’s one of the finest fish soups.

 

Those who fly fish - take your rods, buy a day licence and fish in the Loch for trout..

 

Finest, well hung tender venison can be purchased from Dunlossit Market at Ballygrant on Friday mornings. Pheasant and Woodcock are also available in season. Also visitors must try the haggis and blackpudding.
